PLWDs Celebrate International Events for the First Time

Cheshire Disability Services in Port Moresby has joined the world for the first time this year, to commemorate the International Day of Charity and the World Physiotherapy Day.

The International Day of Charity is celebrated annually on September 5th and the World Physiotherapy Day on September 8th.

Both were celebrated in a combined service today at the Hohola Centre with fun games and presentations by students.

General Manager of the Cheshire Disability Services, Benard Ayieko said Cheshire is a charity organisation that gives back to the society through the support of everyone.

Thanking sponsors and donors for their charity towards the institution, students and staff were once again reminded to take care of charitable facilities.

Youths under the ‘Young Voice’ program, a program that identifies youths living with disabilities in communities and empowers them, also had the opportunity to thank Cheshire for the recognition.

The centre offers five programs in total: Inclusive education, Residency, Physiotherapy Community Base Rehabilitation and Young voice.

Parents, guardians and carers joined in the celebrations, however, Shirley Tuvi –Cheshire Special Events Chairlady said donors did not, as this was the first.

“This event is trial for next year where we will do it better and invite our donors to celebrate with us,” she said.

Shirley added that Cheshire has improved many of its service and is looking forward for more of these activities next year.

Cheshire is one of the leading service providers for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and those who are at a higher risk of developing disabilities in Papua New Guinea.

It is currently providing direct services to 3,500 PWDs and working with over 8,000 families, friends and partners to promote social inclusion for PWDs in PNG.
