Opposition is constructive, says Polye

Opposition Leader Don Polye has assured the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill that the Opposition is constructive.

Polye said the Opposition wanted honest and transparent leaders and leadership.

Polye has rubbished the call by the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill for the Opposition to be constructive, saying the writing was on the wall.

“The Opposition and informed citizens do not want leaders who manipulate the Police Force and the Ombudsman Commission in order to delay investigations.

“It does not want leaders who promptly disband Taskforce Sweep when it finds evidence possibly incriminating a national leader.

“It does not want meaningless Commissions of Inquiry asked to report on government payments to lawyers (including payments to Paul Paraka) which never report.  The Opposition wants honest and accountable leaders for Papua New Guinea,” he said when responding to O’Neill who called on the Opposition to be constructive.

Polye said that Members of Parliament have a duty to their people to be part of decision-making and to keep the Government accountable.

He added that a Vote of No-Confidence could have been speedily undertaken – if the Government did not manipulate Parliament committees and timetables.

“The team of leaders in the Opposition is quality and vibrant. Our founding fathers add value on our side,” he said.

Their core business, he said, is national interest ahead of any other vested ones.

“Our people know him very well that he is good at evading discussions and attack those who challenge him,” he said.

Polye said: “The fight is not between Don Polye and Peter O’Neill. The fight for us is to eradicate corruption, to strengthen governance, comply with rule of law, democracy and citizens’ constitutional rights.”

Polye further said the no-confidence vote was a check-and-balance tool for the Opposition to keep the government accountable to the people.

“We did just that for the best interest of the people.

“The team of leaders in the Opposition is quality and vibrant. Our founding fathers add value on our side,” he said.

Their core business, he said, is national interest ahead of any other vested ones.

“Let me put the record straight that Peter O’Neill himself and his agents have been gagging quality debates at appropriate forums and the latest being the motion of no-confidence debate in Parliament.

“Our people know him very well that he is good at evading discussions and attack those who challenge him,” he said.

Polye said the call was just that, saying the Opposition had not been moved by the re-election of him as the Prime Minister.

“The fight is not between Don Polye and Peter O’Neill. The fight for us to ensure corruption is eradicated, compliance to the rule of law, systems of governance, democracy and human rights in our midst.

“The defeat on the vote of no-confidence is not in the best interest of the country as the problems will not subdue,” he said.

Polye said the Opposition believed that the Prime Minister was not the fit and proper person to occupy the Office of the Prime Minister.

He has assured the people that they would continue to keep the government to stand on its toes until a new Prime Minister takes over.

“The next course of our actions will be decided the Opposition caucus,” he said
