Alotau police to repatriate body of slain cop

Police in Alotau, Milne Bay Province, are preparing to repatriate their comrade, the late Samuel Pias, home to Southern Highlands Province.

The late Pias was shot dead during an exchange of fire between police and an armed gang over the weekend.

Provincial Police Commander, Joseph Morehari, told TVWan news via telephone that officer Pias was shot as the armed gang was getting away after robbing the Jade Island Trading on Saturday, July 30th.

PPC Morehari said some of the suspects were wounded by police, but managed to escape on a dinghy.

The provincial police boss said the vast ocean has not been helpful in their search – saying the trail has gone cold, but they will continue to pursue the suspects.

Alotau MP Charles Abel has condemned the activities of this criminal gang who have caused damage to the town and communities – including contributing to the panic and chaos yesterday.

He called on the provincial law and order committee and the PPC to deal with the matter as soon as possible.

Alotau district is making available K200,000 to buy two 75 horse power dinghies and motors.

Other provincial MPs have also been called on to give support and invest in police equipment.
