Hillsong’s Brian Houston resigns from megachurch

Hillsong’s founding pastor, Brian Houston, has resigned from the megachurch he founded in Sydney two decades ago after internal investigations found he had engaged in inappropriate conduct of “serious concern” with two women.

Houston stood down last Friday, but following another emergency staff meeting on Wednesday the Sydney-based church issued a brief statement announcing his resignation.

Brian Houston, who was born and raised in New Zealand, was charged in October last year with one count of concealing the serious indictable offence of another person.

The founder of Hillsong made the announcement today, after last year stepping aside as director of all Hillsong boards.

He said he intends to vigorously defend the charge.

His father, Frank Houston, was allowed to retire from the church before the allegations of the abuse of a young man became public, and died in 2004.
