New heights for PNG’s doctor

It was that ambition that led her into an early career as a scientific officer in Goroka – and prompted her to continue to develop her skills.

“I came to a point, before going for [further] studies, where I knew I wanted to do more than just laboratory work,” Dr Aho says.

“I realised I wasn’t in a position to lead research, and to be able to do that I needed to get a PhD and be equipped with the skills required to be an independent researcher and compete for research grants and lead research in PNG.”

Scholarship graduates determined to make difference

Selected for their leadership potential, academic skills and ability to contribute to Papua New Guinea’s sustainable development, the returning cohort of 40 completed studies in Australia earlier in 2019 in 12 distinct fields of study, mostly at Master’s level.

Nearly half of the returning scholars come from the provinces and are working to improve governance and service delivery at the subnational level.

Returning graduates took part in a two-day reintegration workshop Port Moresby from 18-19 September.

Awards alumni to strengthen PNG’s workforce

The graduates attended a full day intensive workshop and networking event at the Stanley Hotel, hosted by the Australia Awards in Papua New Guinea. The workshop and networking event were designed to help prepare graduates for reintegration into their respective workplaces and communities upon returning from Australia.
