The PNG boys beat the Tweed Heads Seagulls 22-18 in New South Wales.
The Seagulls came on strong in the opening minutes of the Intrust Super Cup round 22 match with a try through Alex Grant.
An unsuccessful conversion left the scores at 0-4 until 13 minutes into the game and Kody Parsons put another one past the Hunters’ try line.
Rex Johnson converted the try for a 10-point lead.
5 minutes later, a flying Adex Wera responded and a successful conversion by captain Ase Boas narrowed the score margin.
With the scores now at 10-6, the Hunters further closed the gap through a penalty goal 32 minutes into the game.
5 minutes before half time, Brendon Gotuno spun past Seagulls defenders near the sideline for a much-needed try for the visiting team.
With an unsuccessful conversion, the teams went into half time with a score of 12-10, in favour of the Hunters.
A return from second half saw an in-form Watson Boas outrun Seagulls defenders to further put the Hunters in the lead with 16 points.
His brother Ase converted the try, with the scores now at 18-10.
61 minutes into the round 22 match and Junior Rau put the Hunters in a comfortable lead with another try.
With victory almost at hand, the Hunters slackened their defence to allow a surprise try by Jack Cook.
72 minutes in and the Seagulls further narrowed the margin with a Bryce Cartwright try.
It was now 22-18, with the Hunters in danger of handing the match over to the home side.
Fortunately, the PNG boys managed to hold their rivals at bay until the final whistle.
