Gulf to participate in 14 codes at PNG Games

Team Gulf has confirmed that their province will take part in the 7th PNG Games in Kimbe, West New Britain Province in March of this year.

Provincial Sports Coordinator, Ake Maeoka said accreditation for the codes will be submitted by this week.

Team Gulf will participate in 14 codes at the Games.

The codes are touch footy, volleyball, rugby nines, soccer, dart, beach volleyball, taekwondo, karate, weightlifting, athletics, boxing, and basketball and Para sports.

“We had some challenges with the accreditation software but we have managed to fill in and register all our athletes and officials so we are good to go.

“The only delay was of boxing. We were waiting for the provincial association to complete the selection trials and finalise the squad,” said Maeoka.

He added that general preparations for the PNG Games are running smoothly as most selections have been done already.

“Some of our selections were done by having competitions with teams in NCD,” said Maeoka.

Maeoka confirmed Team Gulf has some Port Moresby-based athletes, but the majority of the team is made up of athletes straight from Gulf Province.

“We are doing this to provide the opportunity for our young men and women in the province.

“We want to expose them so we have a majority of them from the province and not city-based ones,” said Maeoka.
