Second Phase of Highlands Highway to begin soon

The second phase of the reconstruction and upgrading of the four lane road from Lae – Nadzab sections of the Highlands Highway will commence soon.

This followed the signing of the K134. 8 million contract in Port Moresby today, by the Independent State of Papua New Guinea and contractor – China Railway International (CRI) to do road works from Wau – Bulolo Junction to Yalu Bridge in Morobe Province.

Department of Works Secretary David Wereh said the road works will start after the preliminary meeting between the contractor and DOW.

“What we are signing is an ongoing program, (of the) 5 year program to deliver the Lae to Nadzab road.

“First section (of 9km) has been completed to a very high four lane road, which is from Bugandi Junction to Wau – Bulolo Junction.”

Wereh said the second phase covering 8km will be completed within 18 months.

“We are still within the K600 million commitment of the Government to deliver from Bugandi roundabout to Nadzab, the remaining section is from Yalu Bridge to the Nadzab Airport and that should complement the redevelopment of the Nadzab Airport.”

CRI deputy manager Tony Mu said section one of the road works from Lae to Nadzab is of high standard, designed and built meeting PNG and Australia specifications.

He added that the company will work together with DOW and local partners to deliver section two within budget and of same high standard.
