PNG’s diplomatic ties ‘fruitful’

Papua New Guinea’s diplomatic relations with other countries this year has been described as fruitful.

Acting Foreign Affairs Secretary, William Dihm, said this success has resulted in stronger connections which will lead to positive results.

He stated this during the briefing of the diplomatic community on the 2017 General Elections and APEC 2018 yesterday.

“We’ve had a fruitful year and we (now) have stronger connection. And I think it’s a win-win situation for your side and our side by having that kind of benefit,” said Dihm.

He highlighted Prime Minister Peter O’Neill’s visits to Japan, China, the Federated States of Micronesia, Hawaii, Cuba, and his attendance at the APEC Summit in Peru.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Rimbink Pato, has also been interacting with many other foreign ministries, especially during major international meetings such as the United Nations Assembly meeting and the COP22 (22nd Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC) in Morocco.

Dihm added they have also had very successful dialogue meetings in Port Moresby as well.

“We’ve had a dialogue meeting with China, with Solomon Island, and also Korea. And these have provided a good platform for understanding where we are in our relationship and where we are going for the new year.

“And we hope that other countries will also be part of these dialogue in the new year.”

Dihm also said he was pleased with the confidence shown by countries to have their embassies built in Port Moresby, saying the closeness will enhance ties through cooperation.
