Domestic violence increasing in NCD

Domestic violence cases in Port Moresby are increasing.

The opening of the new FSC building plays a key part in expanding work space to cater for more victims to come and get the much needed help available in the Centre.

FSC Health Extension Officer, Olivia Ephraim said the centre receives 20 new cases every day and this excludes the follow ups.

The centre has four medicals, two HEO’s, three support staffs and councilors’ and three social workers showing a lack in manpower.

“For one patient, it takes up to four hours to sit and listen to their ordeals. On top of that, we also have follow ups with previous patients which includes both adults and children,” says the HEO.

“Basically in one day, we see 30 to 35 every day we do the best we can to try to help these victims of domestic violence the best way we can.”

The staff thanks the Port Moresby General Hospital management for the new building that will boost their service towards the patients.

The centre provides five essential services, including physiological first aid for survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence, including rape and child abuse.

Victims of domestic violence are urged to be careful and if ever put in that situation, to make their way to the Family Support Centre immediately for help and advice.

The centre is open 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday and on the weekends; the emergency department is open for intervention of survivors.
