18yo arrested for alleged sexual assault

An 18-year-old man from Tetidu LLG in Manus Province, who has been on the run since November 2017 for the alleged sexual assault of a minor, has appeared in the Lorengau District Court.

He was arrested by police in Lorengau last Wednesday.

The 18-year-old man was arrested on February 13th after he was sighted in Lorengau by members of mobile Squad 18.

He remains in custody after he appeared in the district court on Friday for mention.

Police alleged that on 21 November 2017, at Kawaliap, the accused used a kitchen knife to threaten and sexually assault a 15-year-old.

In another incident, a man who beat up his wife on Saturday was later beaten unconscious by his in-laws in retaliation.

The man from Lou is in critical condition at the Lorengau hospital after he sustained serious wounds from the use of knives, sticks and stones.

Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, said the man’s assault on his wife was reported to police.

And while she was in hospital, her relatives attacked him at his house.

Police say two suspects involved in the retaliatory attack are in police custody for questioning; others involved will be arrested soon.

PPC Yapu appealed to relatives of both victims not take matters into their own hands.
