Project runway preps underway

Preparations for this year's Miss Pacific Islands Pageant PNG Project runway are well underway.

Project runway this year is sponsored by the Pacific Balance Fund.

It will be held this Saturday, August 12, at Crowne Plaza in Port Moresby.

11 designers have been confirmed, three of whom are new comers - Annette Sete of Lava Girl, Yaku Omotosho of PNG Fashion International and Cynthia Chapman.

Each designer will create pieces in three categories as required by the MPIP PNG.

Categories on show are Traditionally Inspired Dress, Sarong wear and Day/Eveningwear.

Molly O'Rourke, chairperson, said there is more focus on the TID category this year – winner of the TID will travel to Fiji to be the stylist for Miss PNG at the Pacific Islands Pageant in December this year.

Cash prizes:

Best Day/Evening Wear – K3000

Best Sarong – K3000

Best TID – K4000

O'Rourke said PNG has never worn the TID category at the regional MPIP and has therefore placed emphasis on this category to encourage PNG designers to create something amazing.

The judges for the event are Bou Fonua (Tonga) and Miss Cecilia Keil (Samoa). The two are already in the country.

The third judge is Katherine Lepani – wife of the former High Commissioner to Australia, Charles Lepani. Katherine will join the panel from PNG.

As always, the concept of the project runway is:

- To select outfits for Miss PNG, our entrant to the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant in Fiji in December.

- To provide our local talent a unique opportunity to showcase their designs on the regional platform

- To create awareness for the MPIP PNG pageant and its scholarship fund.

Tickets for the event can be purchased from:

Wantok Clothing, Level 1, VC or MPIP PNG office, Level 6, Defens Haus, downtown.
