New Independence initiative!

One of Port Moresby’s party spots has found a new reason to celebrate the country’s Independence.

Rather than just doing another Independence concert, the Lamana Gold Club will give proceeds back to the local community.

Kumul Concert will be held annually on September 16, and each year, the club selects a local charity/ community appeal to assist.

Setting the trend this year, the first Kumul Concert's proceeds will be going towards the Hanuabada Fire Appeal.

The appeal is to assist families who lost their homes in two separate fire incidents – first fire gutting down 15 houses, the second fire another three houses – at Port Moresby’s largest urban village over the sea.

“These houses sheltered the typical PNG extended family so an entire community was affected from babies up to bubus,” said Jacquie Simons, the assistant manager.

“I have liaised with Dadi Toka Jnr, head of the committee for the Appeal, and he is happy with the support as it will assist with white goods and furnishing for the new houses scheduled to be erected soon.

“We are looking at following up this concert with a corporate dinner next month.”

Entertainment this year will be by legendary PNG band Gwadu, who also have roots in Hanuabada and crowd favourite Moses Tau, who has a lot of fans and family from Hanuabada.

Simons says the entertainment will change every year depending on what the cause is for.

This allows ordinary PNG citizens to help unfortunate PNG communities.

Gates open at 6pm with gate sales: Arena K30 & Balcony K50.

Members will have free entry but must make a donation of their choice to the cause.
