Yonki-Kainantu accident over night

Many people are fighting for their lives and nursing injuries after two vehicles had a nasty head-on accident last night (Thursday night).

The accident happened between Kainantu and Yonki in the Eastern Highlands province near a place called Kolwara Mountain around 10pm involving a 25 seater PMV coaster bus and a Hino Container truck.

Yonki Police station commander Ambros Mara confirmed receiving reports of the accident last night and said no deaths have been reported as yet.

He said the 25 seater PMV coaster bus was travelling down on the Highlands highway when it was hit on the driver side by the Hino container truck.

Mara said the impact of the hit caused the bus to overturn which resulted in passengers receiving serious injuries.

He said heavy fog causing the slippery road conditions could have caused the accident, however, he did not rule of the possibility of speeding.

Passengers with injuries were taken to Kainantu hospital while those with serious injuries were transported to Goroka.

Stanley Tapoka who arrived at the accident scene last night told PNG Loop this morning that commuters on the highway assisted in transporting those they identified as wantoks and relatives for medical attention.

The drivers of both vehcles fled the scene soon after.
