World’s top reggae gospel band delights Moresby residents

The world's top reggae gospel band Christafari delighted Port Moresby residents when they performed at Sione Kami Memorial Church (RSKMC) last night.

Christafari is currently in Moresby after performing in Rabaul and Lae as part of its Melanesian tour.

Papua New Guinea is now the 60th country the band has visited.

Christafari, formed in 1990 is centred on the personality of ordained Minister Mark "Tansoback" Mohr an American, born-again Christian.

Until the age of 17, Mohr was a Rastafarian and the essential goal of Christafari is to promote Christianity to all people including Rastafarians.

Close to 1 000 people from different churches and beliefs, young and old, parents and youth came from all over Port  Moresby to catch a glimpse of their favourite band.

The crowd danced along to their favourite songs including Cries of the City, He Will Deliver Me, Freedom Step, He is Greater Than I and Sitting And Watching as the 10 member band entertained them for two hours.

They were inspired by the style of reggae music and lyrics characterized by a heart for Rastafarians, a passion for reaching the drug-afflicted counter-culture and a distinctly evangelical Christian message.

The group fused rustic roots with modern dancehall and yardee culture to create their own signature sound.

Mohr gave encouragement to youths as he told the meaning of each song that spoke about turning away from drugs, alcohol and engaging in marriage based on Christian principles.
