UPNG students burn newspapers

Stacks of newspapers were burnt this morning by the University of Papua New Guinea students outside the main Waigani campus bus stop.

UPNG Momase student representative Yehingu Humungs told Loop PNG: “We saw the newspapers and saw that the reports were very shallow and biased.

“They are not actual reports of what we students are portraying at the university. That’s why to show our frustration, we went out to the bus stop and burnt those newspapers.

“What we displayed in the morning shows that we have no trust in the media,” the student leader stated.

Yesterday (Thursday) the students carried out awareness from Gerehu to Waigani, informing the general public of the current issues that the country is facing.

The students are calling on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to step aside and be investigated regarding allegations against him.

“We are exercising our civil rights to boycott classes, as stipulated under section 33 of the Constitution.

“We are not alone in this fight. The National Academic Staff Association is also with us. They officially declared their stand yesterday.”
