RSPCA's Paws Walk a hit

The RSPCA of PNG’s Paws Walk, which was held on Sunday (yesterday) in Port Moresby, proved to be a hit.

476 registered human participants took to Ela Beach with 35 doggies. However, that number rose when the general public joined in.

“People from the general public who, after noticing that others were walking their doggies, also came with their doggies and joined (mainly people from the nearby settlement),” community liaison coordinator Brigitte Baki-Ta’u said.

“I counted five young men with their doggies.

“Our own shelter doggies, which we brought along for the walk, were 4, giving us a total of 39 doggies who attended the walk.

“People walking with the NCD Governor also noticed our event and at some point started chanting ‘Paws Walk’. I actually got a little bit surprised when that happened.

“It only lasted for a few minutes as the walkers trailed off to the amphitheater. During the event, we had a stall dedicated to displaying aspects of our animal welfare campaign – particularly our education program and our adoption program,” stated Baki-Ta’u.

“We also tried out a ‘Paw Shop’ to help us raise funds by selling items that a pet needs, such as collars, leads, muzzles, tick and flea collars. We even had doggie treats in the form of frozen popsicles with natural ingredients. We raised a little, which for a charity goes a long way.”

Every year, for the past six years, the RSPCA of PNG has hosted a Paws Walk.

The event is aimed at bringing together pet owners, animal welfare advocates and animal lovers all over Port Moresby. It provides the opportunity for the RSPCA of PNG to highlight its animal welfare campaigns such as the adoption program, the education program and the stray animal collection activity.

This event was proudly supported by: Corporate Transport Niugini, Curtain Bros PNG Limited, Douglas Dimagi, Gateway Children’s Fund, HiTRON, Laguna Hotel, Port Moresby Kiwi Club, Port Moresby Nature Park, Starland Freezers, Tango and Tribe FM.
