Public anticipates Vote of No Confidence

Hundreds of people lined up at the gates of Parliament House as the sitting got underway today.

Most people went to parliament anticipating the Vote of No Confidence (VONC) however nothing about that occurred.

According to section 145 of the Constitution at least 11 members of parliament must sign a private notice of a motion for a Vote of No Confidence.

This notice must be given to the Chairman of the Private Business Committee who is also the Speaker of Parliament.

After determining that a notice of motion is in order under Parliament Standing Order 22, the Private Business Committee shall deliver a copy of its terms to the Clerk.

This notice must be given one week before it can be moved on the floor of parliament.

The motion can only be successful if there are 57 or more votes for it from members of parliament.

Meanwhile the Opposition is moving to give notice of a Vote of No Confidence against Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.

For now they have 11 signatures but have not yet given the notice to the Chairman of the Private Business Committee.
