PNG suffer defeat to Fiji

PNG women basketball team has suffered its second defeat in the Pacific Games.

The home girls lost to bronze medal holders Fiji 86-60 today in front of their home crowd.

Fiji dominated the game, leading throughout the game and taking the lead in the first quarter , 25-16.

In the second quarter, PNG pulled through to keep up but the Fijians were too fast and had a height advantage with players like  Leba Korovou and Vilisi Tavui.

Fiji maintained their lead at the end of the second quarter, 45-31.

PNG lost focus in the third quarter with a lot of simple mistakes like missed passes and travel offences. The home side missed opportunities with inaccurate shots which gave way to Fiji to run away and score baskets.

Fiji opened the gap as they continued to dominate the game, taking their score to 78-43 after the third quarter.

In the final quarter, despite clever ball work from speedy Betty Angula, PNG could not keep up with the fast play demonstrated by the Fijians.

In the end, Fiji came out victorious 60-88 at full time.

In the first match today, Solomon Islands defeated Nauru 95-71.

PNG have a must win game against American Samoa tomorrow. Final playoffs kick off on Saturday with the grand final on Sunday.
