PNG Stoma Foundation continues to survive on Charity

PNG Stoma Foundation successfully had its annual fundraising dinner last night.

The fundraiser saw business houses and individuals stepping in with cash and kind to push the foundation towards achieving its goal.

Founder Janet Yaki, an ostomate herself, thanked all those who have been supporting the society over the years.

She was emotional when reflecting on the hardships of ostomates in the country.

An Ostomate is a person who has undergone a surgical procedure to create an opening in the body that will be used to discharge waste.

Ostomates need colostomy bags, which are placed over their stoma to collect waste products that that would normally pass through a person's rectum and anus in the bathroom.

She said without colostomy bags, it’s very difficult for ostomates to move around freely in public places.

The foundation gets supplies from Ostomates in Australia and distributes to Ostomates in Papua New Guinea.

PNG Stoma Foundation relies heavily on charity due to no government intervention in the area.

Yaki acknowledged the Neville family and the Matrix Construction group who have been behind her as well as the Curtain Brothers.
