PNG Eye Care community observes World Sight Day

The World Sight Day falls on the second Thursday of October and is celebrated annually throughout the world.

This annual day of awareness focuses on global attention on blindness and vision impairment.

The PNG Eye Care community celebrated its World Sight Day today at the National Resource Centre at the UPNG Medical Faculty, Taurama Campus.

Papua New Guinea chief ophthalmologist, Dr. Simon Melenges, says today marks the event’s fourth year of celebration in PNG.

“Today also marks the culmination of what has transpired as we celebrate World Sight Day and we commend the people and sponsor who have come together to support the cause of eye health in the country,” Dr. Melenges says.

A good number of cases have been reduced in the country, thanks to the tremendous support received so far in funds, infrastructure development and medical equipment. They could not have done it on their own.

“We are grateful for fostering and bringing eye health to this stage,” says the ophthalmologist.

He also commended retired ophthalmologist now with PNG Eye Care, Dr. Jambi Garap, who is still putting a lot of effort in bringing eye health to what it is now.
