Pacific Judges meet coincides with PNG Independence

Chief Justices and senior judges in the Pacific who are in Port Moresby this week for a weeklong conference will be given the opportunity to join in the celebration of PNG’s 41 Independence anniversary.

Chairman of the 2016 Pacific Judicial Conference Justice Panuel Mogish this morning welcomed the judges including senior magistrates from 20 Pacific Island Countries.

Justice Mogish said the timing for the conference is also timely as it is scheduled to coincide with PNG’s 41 Independence celebrations.

“This will provide our overseas guest the opportunity to join in the anniversary and festivities in the country in Port Moresby as well as in Kokopo in the East New Britain province,” he said in his welcome remarks today.

He said this is the second opportunity that Papua New Guinea has been given to host the Pacific Judicial Conference. The first was back in 2003.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was also present this morning to officially open the conference.

Various speakers and commentaries will be heard during the course of the week-long conference which started today.

Meanwhile there will not be any National and Supreme Court sitting this week as PNG judges will be attending the Conference.

The National Judiciary Services however says the court registry will remain open this week.
