The Opposition has called for a collective effort in all cross-sections of the population to reduce the threat of climate change in the country.
Opposition Leader Don Pomb Polye says all citizens, including the government and even foreign logging companies, must play their part in reducing the effects of the climate change in the country.
Mr Polye warns that the threat of climate charge if not addressed in a collective effort will have serious consequences for the country.
“One way in which our citizens can contribute to the reduction of climate change is to stop burning bushes and involve in reforestation efforts,” said Mr Polye.
“We must encourage our citizens to refrain from burning bushes as this contributes to effects of climate change, and start planting trees. Even the logging companies operating in the country need to play their part in planting trees,” said Mr Polye.
“The government needs to come down hard on these companies to get them to plant at least four trees for every tree they cut down through their logging activities,” said Mr Polye.
He called on the government to ban the export of round logs which he described as a contributing factor to the effects of climate change.
The Opposition Leader said while Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and his minister responsible continued to make grand speeches in the international arena on the issue of climate change, there must be collective effort spearheaded by the government to reduce the effects of climate change.
He said given the devastating effects of climate change caused by fossil fuels, the government must turn to clean energy as an alternative source.
