NGO to help Kimbe with water and sanitation program

A non-government organisation (NGO) is working with communities in the West New Britain oil palm growers’ blocks to establish a pilot community sanitation enterprise project.

This Live & Learn Environmental Education project, which started last week, will work in communities to establish a community business that will sell affordable toilets and sanitation products to families.

Currently, the project officers are visiting potential communities in the Dagi and Sarakolok areas to conduct baseline research on the availability of clean water and toilets.

Meetings have been held to discuss proper toilets that address the needs of clients such as privacy, safety, environmental safety and affordability.

The sanitation marketing program aims to help all communities enjoy a clean and safe environment through having access to toilets and sanitation services, says the NGO.

The program is currently being piloted with the view to expand to other areas in the province if it is successful.

Live & Learn Environmental Education is based in Kimbe. It implements different community programs on sustainable livelihoods and health education.

The Live & Learn office is located at the Talasea LLG complex in Kimbe and is managed by a local team of skilled professionals working together with support from their Melbourne office.

Live & Learn are also involved in other biodiversity programs with other networking partners, both locally and overseas.
