NEC approves use of DSIP for drought disaster

All districts in the country can now use up to K2 million from the District Services Improvement Program grant to respond to drought affected areas.

This was the announcement made by Finance Minister James Marape after the National Executive Council gave its approval.

Marape says the districts will now be the point for coordinating relief supplies for those affected.

He says the districts are closer to the people and response would be much quicker.

“This will also avoid the layers of public service process that delay response to disasters like this,” he says.

The government has also given a Certificate of Inexpediency which will allow districts to get relief supplies from the following business houses

  • Daewon Limited
  • Trukai Rice Limited
  • Mapai Limited
  • Papindo Wholesale
  • Best Buy Super market
  • Bingtangor  Trading

Marape says the government will also consider other large wholesale and supermarkets in other areas of the country.

Marape says the budgeted f K25 million for disaster emergencies have been expanded and as such the government feels using the districts would be easier and faster.
