Manufacturers warn of counterfeit products

Manufacturers Council chief executive officer Chey Scovell is calling on authorities to crack down on illegal trade stores selling counterfeit products during the Pacific Games.

Mr Scovell told PNG Loop via email that many such businesses will be erecting everywhere without proper licences and selling counterfeit goods.

He added that big events such as the Pacific Games will be a bonus that will bring a short period of increased business for some types of businesses (food, hotel, transport, clothing and souvenirs, local art and crafts and advertising) while for other businesses, it will be a downturn.

He said the other issue that will possibly be encountered was long queues of vehicles along the main streets of the city.

“One of the greatest challenges for employers and businesses is to minimise disruptions, as we’re not clear on how the traffic will be over the two weeks.

“If it’s crazy it will make it hard for staff to get to work on time, home on time and for customers to travel,” Scovell said.

He said it will also be a challenge keeping focus in the workplace as many people will be very excited and talking about the games so there will likely be a loss in productivity in many workplaces.
