Justice Davani laid to rest

Justice Catherine Anne Davani, CSM, was laid to rest today at the Nine-Mile cemetery outside Port Moresby.

Her colleagues from the Judicial and Legal Services, fellow judges, including the Chief Justice and his deputy and families and friends she met through sports, gathered in numbers to lay her to rest.

Members of the PNG Defence Force, who were pallbearers, today handed over the PNG Flag to Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia, who presented to the husband and sons of the late judge before laying the casket into a tiled grave.

Following her funeral yesterday, the late Judge was laid to rest at 11am today.

Most cases listed at the Waigani National Court were not heard today as judges went to pay their final respects.

Justice Davani passed away on Nov 4 in Brisbane, Australia, after silently battling cancer. She is survived by her husband, John Davani, four sons and 11 grandchildren.

She leaves behind her legacy, being the first PNG female judge to be appointed in 2001 after only 10 years practicing as a lawyer. She was also the first from her Dorom village, in the inland Rigo district, to graduate from a university.
