Judge: Send cases back to provinces

Recently appointed acting Judge Danjo Koeget wants to see cases filed at Waigani returned to the provinces they originate from.

Presiding over the past two days, acting Judge Koeget questioned counsels who appeared in matters originating out of Port Moresby, why they were filed to be heard in Waigani and not in the provinces.

Koeget raised the issue on Tuesday during the vacation court sitting that dealt mainly with urgent application.

He raised the issued when dealing with a matter from the West New Britain Province.

Yesterday he also raised the issue of why proceedings from the provinces were filed at Waigani when hearing an urgent application from the Eastern Highlands Province.

“Why are these cases filed here? There are judges back in the provinces who are more than capable of dealing with the issues,” he asked counsels in court.

He also added that the Office of the Chief Justice has issued instructions for the court to have matters from the provinces sent back to where they originate from to cut back on the backlog of cases listed at Waigani.
