Governor Parkop urges residents to ‘be patriotic’

National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop is urging Port Moresby residents to be patriotic this Independence.

It is a common sight in the multi-cultural city where Papua New Guineans tend to give prominence to their provincial colours and little significant to the national flag.

The country will be celebrating its 41 year anniversary on September 16.

Parkop said, 16 September is a day of unity and all Papua New Guineans must be in the national colour as one people.

He added that provincial days are celebrated in the city and now it is the national day.

“We cannot continue to promote our provinces but must unite as one people, one nation and one country by promoting our national flag,” Parkop said.

Meanwhile, this is the time of the year when youths tend to make fast money with sales of flags and other national and provincial merchandise on the streets (as in the picture).
