Government to deal with illegal firearms

The Government is looking at a moratorium on the salesof firearms in the country, Minister for Finance and Leader of Government Business James Marape has revealed today.

He said the Government has also been looking into the use of illegal firearms in the country and increase the period of imprisonment of those convicted.

Marape made those comments after receiving a series of threats to his life and his family  from unknown people.

He said the Government will be looking into the reports by former Commander of Defence Jerry Singirok and Bire Kimisopa on the guns report in the next Parliament session early next month.

Marape said he had been receiving threats from unknown people threatening to kill him and destroy his family for the past two weeks.

He said he had received at least 13 life threatening messages over on-going politics in Hela and the PNG LNG benefits funds.

“I cannot be intimidated by any threats to carry out my responsibilities as an elected parliamentary leader of Hela province and the country as a whole.”

Marape added that the government will also  be looking into the effectiveness of sim card registration by all phone dealers in the country and crack down on all these cybercrime activities.
