End in sight for Gabagaba-Ginigolo conflict

The land conflict between the Gabagaba and Ginigolo villagers in Central Province, where two locals were injured during a clash last month, will soon be resolved.

Acting Central provincial police commander (PPC), Andrew Tovere, told Loop PNG that the villagers have reached a compromise.

“The leaders of both sides have set a peace reconciliation date,” Tovere said.

“On the 26th of this month, both conflicting parties will meet at Jack Pidik Park for their reconciliation.”

On September 7, locals from Gabagaba went on a rampage, burning a couple of Ginigolo bush material houses and chasing their occupants.

A retaliatory confrontation ensued the next day, where women and children were put on dinghies and sent out to sea while the men fought at Gabagaba.

At this stage, the police are aware of only two injuries, Tovere told Loop.

“Those who were taken to the hospital, we are still waiting for their formal complaints to be made so we can facilitate an investigation.”

However, Tovere said they are waiting for the reconciliation to take place first. After the situation is defused, avenues will be created for injured parties to come forward.
