Botten in 100 top CEOs

Oil Search Managing Director, Peter Botten, has been recognised by the Harvard Business Review (HBR) as one of the world's top 100 performing CEOs.

This is the second year in a row that Botten has been named on the prestigious list.

Despite dropping 27 places from 72 to 99 on the list, Botten is among some of the best CEOs to deliver this year despite slow economic growth due to lower commodity prices.

The Harvard Business Review website states that against this bleak backdrop, it’s heartening to see a group of business leaders compiling track records that allow them to stick around and implement long-term strategies.

According to a media release issued by  Oil Search today, Botten is into his 22nd year as CEO of Oil Search, making him the Australian Stock Exchange’s longest serving CEO.

Under Botten’s guidance, the company has grown from a market capitalization of around A$300 million to more than A$14 billion.

His success reflects his deep engagement with social issues, especially in PNG, which was an important factor for inclusion in HBR’s list

As chairman of the Oil Search Foundation, Botten has guided the delivery of major health and education programmes in partnership with the Government and donor agencies.

Since the launch of the list in 2010, the basic philosophy of HBR’s ranking is that business leaders should be judged by the results they produce over their entire tenure, and that the evaluation should be based on objective data, not public opinion.
