Boroko cells: Remandees to be moved out today

The 140-plus remandees at the Boroko police holding cells will all be relocated today.

NCD metropolitan police commander Ben Turi says they began allocating rations to the cells yesterday.

The prisoners will be divided between Gordon’s and Waigani holding cells while Badili is also being prepared to take in some of the men.

Turi says the NCDC health authorities will be sending in another team of officials to go over the site at Boroko again after the men have been moved out. This is to determine the state of the cells.

The cells were highlighted in a recent NCDC and media inspection carried out. The exercise saw that many prisoners developed health conditions associated with the unhygienic state of the water-logged and waste-infested cells.
