HB Fire: Appeal group set up in Cairns

A local Cairns appeal group has been set up to help the survivors at Hanuabada, and is seeking donations in cash and kind.

The appeal group is particularly seeking donations of clothing, toiletries, linen and kitchen items, which will be shipped to Port Moresby.

There will be a benefit concert on Saturday Sept 9, at Tigers Club, off Behan Street Manunda, starting at 6pm.

PNG food will be provided and tickets are $20.

Entertainment includes the popular local PNG/indigenous bands Kamali, Flavor, and Justin Wellington Sunset Raga.

Co-ordinator Olive Tau Davis said that the 200 people who have lost their homes and all of their possessions are in desperate need of assistance.

They are relying solely on donations to their own appeal organised by Hanuabada people, and help from their international friends and families.

“The Hanuabada Fire Appeal – Cairns committee would love to hear from Cairns people and business houses who have links to PNG to help support us so that our extended families can start to rebuild their homes and lives” she added.

There are about 10,000 people of PNG descent in the Cairns area, according to the recent census, and many of them are Motu-Koitabuans who maintain direct links to their families in Hanuabada and other nearby villages.

For further information please contact any of the co-ordinators.

Cash donations can be sent to Hanuabada Fire Appeal – Cairns, Westpac Bank, Lake Street branch, Account No. 828368, BSB 732-118.

Donations in kind can be dropped off at the Samuel residence, 108 Timberlea Drive Bentley Park, the Kerr Residence, 22 Jumna Close Bentley Park, the Davis residence, 331 McCoombe Street Mooroobool, the Domara Residence, 64 Balaclava Road Earlville, and the Mellor residence, 3 Beech Close Manoora.
