OTML opens National Mining Safety Week

Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) officially opened the 2018 National Mining Safety Week (NMSW) with a fun run/walkathon this morning (April 22) in Tabubil, Western Province.

The event saw the participation of 473 employees and contractors, including dependents.

The fun-run/walkathon ended with a sausage sizzle.

This year’s NMSW will take place from April 22-27 with the theme ‘Fitness for Work’, focusing on fitness and reducing fatigue.

OTML deputy CEO and General Manager External Relations, Musje Werror, officially opened the NMSW fun-run/walkathon and encouraged employees to fully participate in the week’s health and safety activities.

“The theme for this week is very timely ‘Fitness For Work’ and I encourage everyone this week to fully participate in the programs,” Werror said.

“It’s an exciting event and there are also activities (that will be happening) at the mine, mill, Bige and Kiunga.

“Today (Sunday April 22) is the start of the national mining safety week and we don’t want to see anyone getting injured so please ensure safety comes first.”

He added having a fit and fatigue-free workforce means that OTML employees and contractors work more productively and most importantly, go home safely at the end of each shift.

Werror thanked OTML’s Occupational Health and Safety department for taking the lead in putting together the NMSW program.

He also thanked contractor companies for putting up displays at their various stalls.

The week’s activities will include daily health and safety discussion topics at pre start meetings, displays by OTML departments and contractors at respective stalls, competitions, circuit classes, a trivia night and a visit by the Papua New Guinea Pukpuk Sevens team.

OTML’s NMSW is in conjunction with the Mineral Resources Authority through the office of the Inspectorate.
