Iran bans private drones from skies over Tehran amid security fears

Licences will now only be granted to "relevant bodies and not individuals", military officials said.

The unmanned aerial devices have caused several security scares after approaching sensitive areas.

Drones have become increasingly popular in Tehran, but have angered locals who believe they infringe their privacy.

"These quadcopters are equipped with cameras and can fly over sensitive sites, film them and be exploited by the enemy," said deputy commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Ali Reza Rabi'i.

Sweden defends officials wearing headscarves in Iran

Trade Minister Ann Linde led a business team last week and faced criticism for wearing a headscarf, or hijab.

Sweden says it has the world's first "feminist government".

A prominent Iranian women's rights activist and Swedish politicians have criticised the decision.

"It is ruinous to what is called a feminist foreign policy" said Liberal party chief Jan Bjorklund, who said Iran oppressed women through legislation.

Iran will not be bullied as thousands march in Tehran

Rouhani marked celebrations of the 38th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution Friday by addressing thousands gathered in Tehran, many of whom have been angered by the travel ban imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Rouhani did not mention Trump by name but instead stated "some amateurs are holding reins of power" in a nearly hour-long speech.

US planning additional sanctions on Iran

The additional sanctions are in response to Iran's ballistic missile test Sunday. They are similar to actions taken by former President Barack Obama after Iran's previous ballistic missile tests.

In a letter to Trump Thursday, a bipartisan group of senators said "Iranian leaders must feel sufficient pressure to cease deeply destabilizing activities, from sponsoring terrorist groups to continued testing of ballistic missiles."

A government committee called for restrictions citing a report from psychologists, who said it encouraged violence and tribal conflict.

The app could also negatively affect family life if teenagers got addicted to the game, warned the committee that polices cyberspace.

Statistics gathered earlier this year suggested that about 64% of mobile gamers in Iran played the game.

Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei warns US on sanctions

"If this sanction is implemented, this is definitely a violation of the agreement, without any doubt," Khamenei said in an address on state television.

"And they should know that the Islamic Republic will definitely react towards it."

The US Congress voted last week to extend the Iran Sanctions Act for another 10 years.

However, the Obama administration is working to stave off any additional sanctions and encouraging American companies to do business with Iran, a US official tells CNN.

'Activists held' at King Cyrus tomb in Iran

They say the activists were detained for violating "the values" of the Islamic Republic of Iran and chanting nationalistic slogans.

Sunday's rally was held in Pasargadae, 630km (390 miles) south of Tehran.

Cyrus, who ruled in the 6th Century BC, reputedly established the first universal declaration of human rights.

Activists believe that 30 October marks the day Cyrus conquered Babylon in modern-day Iraq and declared all peoples equal in his Achaemenid Empire.

He is said to have freed slaves, including thousands of Jews.

US official: Navy aircraft threatened with shoot down by Iran

The aircraft were flying in international airspace but "near Iranian airspace."

The Iranians made a radio call to both planes warning them not to enter Iranian airspace and risk being shot down, the official said. The US aircraft never entered Iranian airspace and proceeded without incident.

The Iranians threatened to launch missiles to shoot down the aircraft as part of the threat.

British Airways to resume direct flights to Iran

It will be the first direct flight by a UK carrier to Iran since 2012, when the route became commercially unviable because relations had broken down.

It follows the lifting of some sanctions against Iran in January and the re-opening of the British embassy in the Iranian capital in 2015.

BA said it will run flights six days a week from London Heathrow.

The Boeing 777 will depart just after 21:00 BST on Thursday.

US Navy ship fires warning shots towards Iranian vessel

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said three warning shots were fired from a .50 calibre gun on Wednesday (local time) after warning flares did not work.

The incident started with three Iranian vessels, but there was only one Iranian vessel around by the time the warning shots were fired, the official said.

The official added that at one point an Iranian vessel came within 200 metres of a US ship.
