The incident surfaced after he posted condemnation of Harvey Weinstein, who is facing sexual assault allegations.

One Twitter user remembered how Affleck "grabbed Hilarie Burton's breasts on TRL once" but "everyone forgot though". Burton replied: "I didn't forget."

Affleck later wrote on Twitter: "I acted inappropriately toward Ms Burton and I sincerely apologise."

A clip of the moment from TRL Uncensored was recirculated, including a clip of Burton recalling how Affleck had put his arm around her and proceeded to "tweak my left boob".

In a Facebook post, the Batman and Argo actor admitted that alcoholism was "something I've dealt with in the past and will continue to confront".

He said the latest course of treatment was "the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery".

His battles with drink problems stretch back more than 15 years, with his first reported stint in an alcohol treatment clinic taking place in 2001.

According to Variety, the Ben Affleck crime drama is set to lose the Warner Bros studio $75m (£60m).

The film cost an estimated $65m (£52m) to make but has only made $16.5m (£13m) of it back.

Factor in the costs of marketing and distribution and the period gangster thriller looks like it's firing blanks.

It's a galling comedown for Affleck, whose last film as director was the Oscar-winning Argo.

"She felt like she wanted to discuss it and get it out there and get it over with," the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star explained in an interview with the New York Times, "so she could say, 'Look, I already talked about it—I don't want to do it again."

"It's fine," he added. "She's allowed to talk about it."

Affleck, 43, has nothing but good things to say about Garner, also 43. "Jen's great. She's a great person," he said. "We're on great terms. I just saw her this morning, so that's the reality that I live in."
