Highly anticipated squash, tennis open

The Port Moresby Racquets Club is looking forward to this weekend’s Squash and Tennis Open.

Starting from Friday evening through to Monday, over 150 entrants across 20 divisions will be showcasing their skills in the nation’s capital.

Squash tournament director, Brett Cox, described the Queen’s Birthday event as the premier squash tournament in PNG.

“We’ve got people coming in all over PNG – coming in from Lae, from Hagen, from Sepik plus we’ve got Australia and New Zealand competitors coming in,” Cox stated.

“I think our youngest competitor is six or seven, and our oldest is in the 70s. We’ve got a huge range of competitors – from the under 8s to the golden oldies, which is the 55 and above tournament. And both of them are quite well-populated with people.”

Furthermore, PNG’s tennis representative, Eddie Mera, will be using the event as a lead up to the Pacific Games in July. The 24-year-old, from a mixed parentage of Gulf and New Ireland, is anticipating an enjoyable challenge.
