Athletics PNG's 2018 focus

Domestic programs are the focus for this year for Athletics PNG.

This means there will be a cut to overseas trips and contingent for international tournaments and competitions.

Attention is now being turned towards planning for the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.

Apart from the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast in April which will feature eleven PNG athletes, Team PNG will send a similar contingent for the Melanesian Championship in May and a Two  member team for the World Junior Championships in July and the Olympic Youth Games in October.

Athletics PNG President Tony Green said the size of the athletics contingent for all international competitions will be reduced due to funding restraints.

In preparation for the Pacific Games, Athletics PNG is looking towards identifying the weaknesses in the squad and target athletes who can strengthen the team in those areas.

Athletes who wish to be considered for the Pacific Games next year will be expected to compete in domestic competitions in their respective centres, purposely for consistency.

Meanwhile the Athletics Team for the Commonwealth Games will be announced in the next week or so.
