Woman sentenced for false pretense

A mother of four from the Western Highlands province has been sentenced to 4 years jail time for obtaining monies by false pretense.

The former employee of the National Road Authority obtained a total of K95,500 by false pretense from two people.

Rebbaca Kunti obtained K65,000 and K30,500 respectively from two people, under the pretext of assisting them bid for two vehicles which she claimed to be on tender by the Authority.

The first amount was received between 29 November 2016 and 10 February 2017.

The amount of K30,500 was obtained between 6 June 2016 and 8 November 2016.

Both victims of this offense made deposits of those monies Kunti to bid for a Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser.

Monies were received however neither vehicles were delivered to the victims.

She now has no means of repaying the K95,500.

She pleaded guilty before the National Court to committing the offense.

Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika in sentencing her said this case amongst the worst of false pretense.

"You need to change your habit now if you want a better future. K95,500 is alot of money," He told the Western Highlands woman.

"The second victim's wife got a loan from ANZ bank to buy vehicle, which was never delivered. This offense is a prevalent offense.

"You've done a lot of harm to those two families you lied to. There is value in cultivating good habits. I wonder what you parents think about you at this time. Are they questioning themselves where they went wrong in raising you? " Sir Gibbs added.

Kunti spent a year in custody. That period will be suspended from the Four year jail term.

She will serve the remaining three years at Bomana.
