Sir Julius remembers late Kavieng leader

The New Ireland Governor has paid tribute to the former Member for Kavieng and Minister of State, the late Epel Tito of Omo village.

Sir Julius Chan on Friday joined with family, relatives, clansmen and villagers to pay last respects and lay to rest the body of the late Tito.

Late Tito was a leader whom Sir Julius described as a strong fighter for the rights of his people for equitable benefits for land given away by the Tigak people of Kavieng for the expansion of the Kavieng Township and the Kavieng airport.

“He was a faithful fighter right throughout his life. He captured the respect of the people in 1982 by riding a bicycle to campaign and got elected into Parliament as the Member for Kavieng from 1982 to 1987,” recalled Sir Julius.

“His contribution to the nation are archived in his role as cooperative officer before he became communications minister and one of the few New Irelanders who held a ministerial portfolio.”

Sir J was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Rupa Pala, PEC Chairman for Youth, Linson Aaron, Provincial Administrator Lamiller Pawut and staff of his office.

Meantime, food items and cash contribution were presented at the haus krai by the Assembly Chief of Chiefs, Demas Kavavu, on behalf of the Government of New Ireland.
