Review: This week in court

This week was Supreme Court sitting for the month of August. Most cases heard by judges had their decisions reserved to a later date for decision.

In the National Court, a 65-year-old man from the East New Britain province was sentenced to four years in jail after he was found guilty for borrowing money and not returning.

On Tuesday, the tribunal that was supposed to have commenced against senior judge, Justice Sir Bernard Sakora, was adjourned for three weeks.

The adjournment was because his lawyer was not ready with necessary documents to assist the tribunal.

Also this week, former Western Governor Ati Wobiro, who is now serving a seven-year sentence at Bomana, asked the Supreme Court to reopen and revisit his appeal.

The former governor, who had slimmed down, looked well after the court hearing on Friday as he came out of court with his supporters.

Over to the Manus transferees’ case, their lawyer will be making a formal request through an application in the Supreme Court to seek injunctive orders next month after appearing in court on Friday.

They will be asking the court through an application to stop the dismantling at the Manus Lombrum centre.

And to election petitions, aggrieved candidates of the West New Britain Regional seat have come together to file an election petition against Governor Sasindran Muthuvel and the Electoral Commission, to the Court of Disputed Returns.
