Man pleads guilty to school rape incident

A man has admitted before the Waigani National Court to his involvement in the rape of a female student who was attending the Mt Diamond Secondary School in June of 2015.

The man, from the Eastern Highlands Province, appeared before Justice Panuel Mogish and pleaded guilty.

He was arrested and charged under section 347 (1) of the Criminal Code, for allegedly sexually penetrating another person without her consent near the Mt Diamond Secondary School grounds.

It is alleged he was part of the group of students who were involved in the unconsented sexual penetration of a fellow female student while under the influence of alcohol on June 16, 2015.

He admitted to the allegations as one of those involved in the incident. The court accepted his plea.

The court heard that the victim was drinking that day with some boys who were all students at the time when the incident took place.

A video of the incident was also recorded, which went viral on social media.

He will return to court later this month where his lawyers and the state will make submissions on what his appropriate penalty should be.

Other accused in this incident are also expected to appear in court soon.
