Honouring Amelia Earhart

The PNG University of Technology (UNITECH), PNG Tribal Foundation, and the U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby are seeking design proposals for sculptures, in honour of Amelia Earhart.

Earhart is being celebrated for her contributions to female aviators, women in technology, and aeronautical sciences, the Artists from Papua New Guinea are invited to submit a proposal for a project that shares a personal depiction with Amelia Earhart’s vision as a pioneer aviator.

Earhart was an American aviation pioneer who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean; and during her attempt at becoming the first woman to complete a circum-navigational flight of the globe in 1937, she disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Amelia and her navigator were last seen in Lae, Papua New Guinea, on July 2, 1937.

The objective of this project is to create a piece of art that represents and celebrates the impact of Amelia Earhart’s life on women in aviation and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related fields.

The final artwork will be constructed on a cement base 1.5m x 2m and will be located on the campus of the UNITECH in Lae. The art piece must be able to withstand the climate in Lae, including extreme heat, wind, rain, and humidity. There is no height or width preference, but concepts should take the size of the cement base into consideration and ensure that the sculpture will become a permanent fixture on campus.

The deadline for proposals is Thursday, June 30, 2022, midnight PNG time. All applicants are encouraged to email proposals to contact@pngtribe.org, or deliver in person at the offices of the Papua New Guinea Tribal Foundation.
