Wanted Chinese man appears in court

A Chinese man who was earlier wanted by police in the National Capital District has appeared in court for misappropriation charges.

James Zhou Qianbin appeared at the Waigani Committal Court this morning before Magistrate Cosmas Bidar where the charge against him was read in court.

The man from mainland China was arrested by NCD Fraud investigators on January 18, however he failed to appear in court.

This resulted in police issuing a notice for his apprehension.

It is alleged that between September 27 and December 24,  last year, at the Green International Ltd office at Waigani, he was alleged to have dishonestly applied to his own use monies belonging to the company.

The said amount is K200,000, money belonging to Green International Limited.

The Court imposed conditions for Qianbin’s passport to be brought to the Waigani Committal Court clerk for safekeeping and for him to report to registry every Fridays between 9am and 2pm.

He remains on a bail of K5000. He will return to court next month.

Zhou Qianbin was allegedly to have committed the crime with his wife, Ge Jiao Jiao.

However, the wife was allegedly aided by corrupt government officials to escape arrest and prosecution, according to NCD Central Commander Assistant Commissioner Sylvester Kalaut.

She managed to escape on Feb 4 on a  Philippines Airline flight bound for Manila.

The couple worked for a firm and were in charge of collecting fees for Visa and Work Permit applications for Chinese nationals entering Papua New Guinea for employment opportunities. The couple were alleged to have colluded and secretly wired large portions of these payments to Asia without the knowledge of the company Directors, one of whom is a Papua New Guinea national.
