Valley sees fireworks for the first time

For the first time ever, the Obura Wonenara electorate in Eastern Highlands Province came alive with fireworks during the Independence Day celebrations on September 16.

The fireworks, from Port Moresby, lit the valley and the Yonki Township for approximately six minutes.

This small electricity township went all out during its celebrations. It hosted a flag raising ceremony at the Independence Park followed by traditional singsing and of course, the spectacular fireworks.

The flag raising commenced at dawn by the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) from the Lae-based Engineering Battalion.

The independence breakfast was cancelled due to heavy downpour but a combined joint forces parade went ahead as planned.

The guest of honour was the Japanese Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency Morio Matsumoto, and Provincial Administrator of Eastern Highlands Solomon Tato.

After the parade inspection and speeches, each province showcased their traditional attire.

Just before dusk, the flag overlooking the dam was lowered, and then the much-anticipated fireworks started just after 8pm.

It was the first time fireworks was part of the valley’s celebrations, thanks to the local leaders.
