Valley Mantas prove their worth in Mt Hagen

The Valley Mantas from Wewak have proven they did not just come to the PNG Power National Softball Club Fast Pitch tournament to make the numbers.

The 15-man squad made the journey from Wewak to the Western Highlands Province arriving on Thursday morning.

Led by player/coach, Alex Kilus, Mantas got straight down to business winning their first two games on Thursday against Rovers and Pirates.

"We came here to play and show the rest of the country that we can play softball," said Kilus.

Wewak which is one of the smallest softball associations in the country has four men's and four  women's teams that play in the competition back at home.

Mantas did it tough today going down to two of Port Moresby's top clubs- Yokomo and Defence.

Mantas lost 15-1 to Yokomo and then 7-4 to Defence.

"Our youngest player is 16 year old Desmond Tiriou. It's been a good experience for the boys most of whom this is their first time to come to Hagen," said Kilus.
