UPNG students appear in court

Four UPNG students appeared at the Waigani Committal Court today on allegations they used a vehicle without the consent of its owner.

Following their arrest on June 23, Brendan Kisa, Elizah Nere, Divimal Marus and Frank Luwai all returned to court where the charges against them were read out. They were arraigned today after their lawyer, Laken Lepatu Aigilo, succeeded in obtaining bail at K500 from the District Court on June 29.

They were charged on June 27 for the unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Police allege the students were in possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a Toyota Sedan reg no. SAC 625 on June 24, and used it without the consent of the owner – an allegation the students denied through their lawyer. They said consent was obtained from the owner of the vehicle.

Magistrate Cosmas Bidar, in reading the charge, said the case is new at this stage and police will now conduct further investigations.

The four accusers are expected back in court on August 4.
