UPNG students’ conduct illegal, says Mellam

Vice-chancellor of the University of Papua New Guinea, Professor Albert Mellam, says the conduct of UPNG students has been illegal since day 1.

He told the National Security Advisory Committee this morning while filing a situational report.

Chief Secretary to the government Isaac Lupari, in a media conference this morning, said from the reports received from Mellam, students did not follow the university by-laws and the SRC Act when staging the six-week long boycott which led to a confrontation with police yesterday.

This and other matters will now be the subject of investigation the university council will look into.

Mellam has also told the committee that all SRC funds are being withheld, apart from K6000 that was released and used in the first week of the boycott.

Lupari says from reports received, no further funds were released after that. Investigations by the UPNG council, the police and the government will all look into where students got their funding from to the conduct their activities.

Some activities include students travelling to provincial centres and conducting awareness with the use of hired vehicles.

Lupari said they were informed that outsiders had been involved in the failed protest yesterday, which they will also look into.

He further alleged that two of the 23 injured from the confrontation yesterday are not students but outsiders who took part in the protest.
