UPNG SRC file application against Police

Student leaders of the University of Papua New Guinea are expected to move an urgent application before the National Court today.

Their lawyer, Laken Lepatu Aigilo, filed the application under the Human Rights track list on Tuesday, seeking three main orders against the police.

Justice Derek Hartshorn will hear the application before lunch today.

SRC president Kenneth Rapa and other student leaders filed the application against NCD metropolitan superintendent Ben Turi, NCD/Central Commander Sylvester Kalaut, Police Commissioner Gari Baki and the State.

The students are seeking restraining orders against police being stationed at both its Taurama and Waigani Campus.

They are also seeking restraining orders against the police harassing students, the SRC president and other student leaders.

They will also be asking the court to declare that the shooting of students last Wednesday was an execution of orders by police, thus breaching relevant human rights provisions of the constitution.

Justice Hartshorn stood down the application to be heard later this morning as police were not served the application.

Aigilo told the court this morning that the application was not served yesterday on Police as it was filed late.

It will be moved as an urgent application and Justice Hartshorn is expected to hear it before lunch today.
